In a heartening display of community service, the Maui Police Department announced that its Mobile Medical Education Unit (MMEU) was set up in Kalama Park, Kihei to support the houseless population. On Monday, services like mental health assistance, food stamps, non-critical wound care, and clothing distribution were made available to those in need, as reported by the Maui Police Department.
The MMEU program, as detailed in a Facebook post by the Maui Police Department, was generously supported by community partners. Dr. Ricalde-Garcia offered critical services such as blood pressure testing and even tended to a non-critical wound for an individual. The array of services also included medical care kits which can serve as a valuable resource for those lacking access to primary healthcare facilities.
Other groups also helped with this important outreach. The Maui AIDS Foundation gave out hygiene kits, shared information about medical QUEST, and offered free STD testing. Their support went beyond basic needs by also focusing on health education and prevention. At the same time, the Maui Humane Society helped the pets of the houseless community by providing vaccines, food, and supplies like dog toys, collars, leashes, and harnesses.
