What’s Happening to the Animals Displaced by the Maui Wildfires?

Prior to gaining access to the Lahaina burn zone, MHS conducted daily searches around its perimeter. Once it was granted permission to enter on Aug. 26, escorted by the National Guard, it did so in a coordinated effort with the Greater Good Charities trapping team and the Hawai‘i Animal Kuleana Alliance. Along with dogs and cats, rescuers have also been finding pigs, goats, chickens, parrots and tortoises, a HAKA representative tells us.

ASPCA Field Report: Maui Wildfire Response Efforts

Two weeks ago, our National Field Response team mobilized to Hawaii after receiving an urgent request from the Maui Humane Society following the catastrophic wildfires that have devastated Lahaina. While on the ground, our team has assisted with animal search and rescue, brought found animals to receive critical care, provided food, shelter and water for animals whose owners have been hospitalized—including dogs, cats, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens and tortoises—and distributed critical supplies to pet owners in the community.
