“Right now more than ever, we need to get pets into homes and we host ‘Empty the Shelters’ events quarterly. And we see that during these quarterly events, about 1,000 pets are adopted each day. And since we started this program in 2016, we’ve had nearly 140,000 pets go to loving homes,” Schlacter said. Adoption fees will be reduced for cats and dogs at all of the Humane Society shelters from May 1 to 15.
From May 1 to May 15, BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Spring National “Empty the Shelters” will take place at more than 350 shelters in 45 states with pets available for adoption for just $50 or less, including Maui Humane Society. Maui Humane Society will participate May 1–15, 2023, offering $0 adoption fees for dogs over 6 months, cats, all small animals, and a reduced adoption fee of $25 for all kittens. Help is desperately needed at Maui’s only animal shelter. Officials at the Maui Humane Society say it is overcapacity — more than ever before. They even have signs up at the entrance saying, “WE ARE FULL.” “We are asking the community to come and foster animals as soon as they can. What we need is animals to get out of the kennels. We don’t have any open kennels right now, which means any animal coming in, we don’t have space for,” said Katie Shannon, Maui Humane Society director of marketing.
The Maui Humane Society is urgently requesting the community’s help to provide temporary homes for dogs as on Tuesday it had 120 dogs in their care and the kennel has a capacity of only 40, a news release said.
Maui Humane Society has put out an urgent request to the public to help find temporary or permanent homes for its dogs as it’s currently over capacity. Officials said 30 “SOS Fosters” are needed immediately to help free up space.
