“Right now more than ever, we need to get pets into homes and we host ‘Empty the Shelters’ events quarterly. And we see that during these quarterly events, about 1,000 pets are adopted each day. And since we started this program in 2016, we’ve had nearly 140,000 pets go to loving homes,” Schlacter said. Adoption fees will be reduced for cats and dogs at all of the Humane Society shelters from May 1 to 15.

The Maui News: Maui Humane Society joins nationwide adoption event
The Maui Humane Society is participating in a nationwide adoption event that offers zero to low cost adoption fees for a limited time, from May 1-May 15. The BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, announced it will team up with Dogtopia for the foundation’s first “Empty the Shelters” national adoption event of 2023.

Help is desperately needed at Maui’s only animal shelter. Officials at the Maui Humane Society say it is overcapacity — more than ever before. They even have signs up at the entrance saying, “WE ARE FULL.” “We are asking the community to come and foster animals as soon as they can. What we need is animals to get out of the kennels. We don’t have any open kennels right now, which means any animal coming in, we don’t have space for,” said Katie Shannon, Maui Humane Society director of marketing.
