The shelter is overcapacity due to the high surrender and stray intake rates that spiked because of the pandemic. There are currently more than 500 animals under the care of the Humane Society. That is 25% more compared to the same month last year.
During the pandemic, animal shelters like the Maui Humane Society are experiencing an uptick in owner surrenders and stray intakes.
Senior shelter dogs can linger at shelters for 4x longer than younger pups. Many people don’t adopt seniors because they think they are ‘broken” and worry about medical costs it takes to support them. But, Maui Humane Society has just the offer to change your mind.
“The amount of impact she has had on our organization and for our community’s animals can not be measured enough, we would not be where we are today without her. Dr. Kim has been a steady, dedicated advocate for our shelter and community animals,” said Director of Veterinary Services, Kelly Maguire.
If you’ve ever adopted an animal from Maui Humane Society, chances are that it was helped by Dr. Miyo Kim. After 41 years in the veterinary field, including 25 years as Maui Humane Society’s Senior Shelter Veterinarian, Dr. Kim has announced her retirement.
Old dogs have something to wag about this summer, as The Grey Muzzle Organization announces the recipients of its annual grants, and dogs at Maui Humane Society are among the winners. MHS has received $10,000 specifically to help the medical and dental needs of senior dogs.
Maui Humane Society on Maui is one of 77 animal welfare groups chosen from 266 applicants to receive a grant to help local senior dogs. The winning groups received more than $616,000 in grants to help save or improve the lives of at-risk old dogs in their communities.
“Ten national animal welfare organizations came together this year to encourage the development and expansion of Return to Home programs, which help reunite lost pets with their loving families.” Maui Humane Society was one of them.
On-call veterinarian Dr. Jennifer Fitzpatrick rushed to the shelter to assess the situation and provide the dog with pain medications, antibiotics and wound treatment. Her jaw was supported as x-rays were ordered.
“For many people who have adopted a pet, people tell me ‘I’m saving this animal, but really that animal is saving me’ because, you know, the animals give so much back to us, so that’s really rewarding when you see that bond and knowing that you’re helpful in maintaining that bond.”
