MAUI, Hawai’i (Island News) — The Maui Humane Society is beefing up its security measures after one of its storage containers was burglarized, resulting in a total of about $2,000 in losses and damages.
“For them to feel like they have to come in and take, as opposed to just scheduling an appointment, we’re happy to give it to them,” Maui Humane Society Chief of Operations Nikki Russell said.
Whoever burglarized the container busted a $300 lock to get in, then stole a cart as well as 20 dry food bags and 18 cases of wet food.
The stolen food was designated for the humane society’s food distribution program, which provides free pet food for about 350 families each month.
“These are dogs and cats with people who have lost their jobs, people who are moving from home to home, these are people from Lahaina who are living in FEMA housing and they’re struggling,” Russell added.
The same container was also broken into about two months ago, Russell reported, and the shelter has dealt with other similar crimes in the past.
To deter more break-ins, Russell said the facility is upgrading its surveillance system.
“Very little had been taken prior to this break-in though, so this is probably the one that’s impacted us most,” Russell shared.
If you have any information on the burglary you are asked to report it to Maui police.
