Licensing Your Dog
A current license is your pet’s badge of safety and a microchip is their permanent ID. Together, they are your pet’s ticket home.
Per Maui County Code 6.04.020, all dogs over four months old must be licensed, including indoor and fenced dogs or those that never leave your property. Licenses must be current, visible, and worn at all times. They are non-transferable, so new owners must relicense any adopted dogs. Failure to license your dog could result in a fine of up to $500.
License Duration & Fees
Licenses are valid for 2 calendar years and must be renewed before the end of the 2nd calendar year, regardless of purchase month. For example, a license purchased in August 2025 will still need to be renewed in January 2027 as two calendar years will have passed (2025 & 2026).
Maui County’s dog licensing fees cost $76 if your dog is intact, or only $11 with proof of spay or neuter. There is a $10 processing fee for any license that is mailed or processed online.

FAQs
How often do I need to renew my pet’s license?
Licenses are valid for two calendar years. Regardless of purchase date, licenses are valid from January 1 – December 31.
Which Maui County Code states I need to license my dog?
Maui County Code 6.04.020 requires that all dogs over the age of four months be currently licensed. That includes indoor dogs, dogs that are kenneled or fenced, and dogs that never leave your property. Dog licenses must be current, clearly visible and worn by your dog at all times. Dog licenses are not transferrable from one owner to the next or from one dog to another. If you give your dog to someone else the new owner must license the dog and the original owner can and should contact the shelter and let us know that you no longer own the dog.
Owning or harboring an unlicensed dog carries a maximum penalty of $500.
What is the cost to get a replacement license tag?
A replacement license tag is $5 and can be purchased and picked up at Maui Humane Society during regular business hours.
Am I required to license my cat?
You are not legally required to license your cat. However, ID tags or a microchip for your cat will greatly increase the odds that your cat will be returned to you in the event that he or she strays or becomes lost. Microchips are a safe, permanent form of identification and can be easily scanned by shelters or veterinarians to help reunite you with your pet.
